Macbeth | 2001 | by William Shakespeare

Macbeth was a performance in two parts, performed by three actors. The audience were placed in traverse, and the action unfolded on a battered wooden floor littered with plastic toy soldiers. The first half of the performance was relatively faithful to Shakespeare’s text, though heavily cut, and the actor’s actions observed an equivalence to the behaviour of the characters. The second part abandoned words almost entirely, and in the loosest possible fashion followed Shakespeare’s plot.

The dramaturgy represented the psychological disintegration of the characters towards the end of the play. The closing image saw Macbeth reciting the “Tomorrow” speech in a flat, disinterested tone while arranging toy soldiers in a circle about him.

“Loose Canon has returned from its investigation of physical theatre with a strange and beautiful production. Strange as in unfamiliar, and beautiful in ways that are satisfying both visually and conceptually.”
